In the Berger house there were four people and one dog. The four people were called Dad, Mum, Louise and Tom. The dog was called Biscotte, and Biscotte had one very serious passion: slipperThe soft shoe you wear indoors to keep your feet warm.s.

Every night, while everyone slept, Biscotte did her rounds. She fetched Dad's blue slipperThe soft shoe you wear indoors to keep your feet warm.. Then Mum's two pink ones. Then Louise's, then Tom's, then Tom's other one, which was always further away than the first.

She carried them back one by one to her basketThe bed a dog or cat sleeps in, usually with a cushion inside., arranged them in a neat round heap, and lay down on top. There. That was her night's work.

In the morning it was always the same song. “Where are my slipperThe soft shoe you wear indoors to keep your feet warm.s?” Dad shouted from the stairs. “Under the dog!” the other three answered all at once.

So everyone came into the kitchen, and negotiations began. Biscotte did not growl, did not bite, and did not move either. She simply pretended to be very deeply asleep, which is the finest defence known to dogs.

One day Louise decided to investigate. She asked the vetThe animal doctor, who treats them and understands how they live. why Biscotte stole the slipperThe soft shoe you wear indoors to keep your feet warm.s. The vet thought about it and said: “She is not stealing them. She is gathering them.”

“A slipperThe soft shoe you wear indoors to keep your feet warm. keeps the smell of the person who wears it,” she explained. “Biscotte cannot fit all four of you into her basketThe bed a dog or cat sleeps in, usually with a cushion inside.. So she takes the thing that is most like you, and sleeps in the middle of it.”

That evening Louise deliberately put her slipperThe soft shoe you wear indoors to keep your feet warm. right beside the basketThe bed a dog or cat sleeps in, usually with a cushion inside., to make the job easier. The whole family did the same, without saying a word to each other. The next morning nobody could find their slippers, and for the first time it made everybody laugh.

The end, sweet dreams.
